What happened to my ranking on Google?

Wonder what happened to your ranking on Google? Why conversions are going down?

In this post, we will try to answer these questions, and take your website to next phase of online marketing – if you listen, and act fast.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Five things have been happened at Google Mountain View Headquarters recently:

  1. Google patent – A new Google patent has been rolled in. I call it “do”,” know”, and “act”.
  2. Microdata – Microdata (schema.org) took big step forward with the new Apple’s (and Android) Siri voice activation.
  3. Brand links – In May of 2010, Google announced via their blog that they had made brand refinements for product information in Google. The purpose of the brand links is to make it easier for users to find “popular” brands. According to their post, these “popular” brands are determined algorithmically.
  4. Google’s “Freshness” Update – Five days ago, Google announced that they released a new update that impacts roughly 35% of searches and can better determine when to give you more up-to-date relevant results.
  5. Facebook comments – Google’s new search engine updates now render JavaScript, which now allows comments made by Facebook comments be indexed via Google.

  1. Google patent – According to the patent, as Action (“Do”), Information (“Know”) or Navigation (“Go”) model comes up a lot in the document and is a pretty useful structure for understanding search in general…Read more > //  Easy steps to fix it >
  2. Microdata – The time has come for you to learn more about Schema.org new metatags. //  Easy steps to fix it >

  4. Google’s “Freshness” Update – The change builds on top of its previous “Caffeine” update (more details at Caffeine Update > ) in order to deliver more up-to-date and relevant search results. Google says that the new algorithm knows that different types of searches have different freshness needs, and weighs them accordingly. For example, a search for a favorite recipe posted a few years ago may still be popular enough to rank highly. //  Easy steps to fix it > – D2S clients can optimize this factor within the pages D2S publishes.
  5. Facebook comments. //  Easy steps to fix it > – Having real people visible asking questions on your site via Facebook is a massive trust metric and can make very positive impacts on your conversion rate Read more >>

Google MayDay Update and Search3w Fix

Google latest ranking algorithm update that has been given the name “May Day”. If your website gets fewer visitors from Google, the update could be the reason for that. Many web-owners have seen a huge drop in traffic from Google for keyword phrases that are three or more keywords long (so called “long tail keywords”). Some reported lost 90% of their traffic from Google!

Search3w D2S subscribers with the long tail module are getting their sites republished in these moments. Keep reading to explore the details and to learn how to fix it.

A newly granted Google patent (click here to see it) on phrase-based indexing calls for a new look at that approach to indexing phrases on the Web, including a process referred to as “phrasification”.
This is not a penalty but a change in Google’s ranking algorithm. Google is able now to index longer keyword phrases more accurately.
How do you know if you were affected? Well, start by checking your search referral traffic between April 28th and May 3rd; do you see a drop? If so, this is the change in the number of referrals, or the number of pages getting traffic.  A drop in traffic to your big terms isn’t likely with “May Day”, but a drop in pages getting search referrals (long tail traffic), could be.

The new index is using a scoring model that includes:

  • The expected probability of the phrase occurring in a document
  • The number of phrases in the “phrasification”
  • A confidence measure of each phrase
  • Adjustment parameters for controlling the precision

Identifying phrases requires a lot of computing power and a lot of memory (which Search3w has the server power to mimic Google). On the assumption that any five words could constitute a phrase, and that a large corpus would have at least 200,000 unique terms, there would be approximately 3.2 x 10 power 26 possible phrases.
What to do?

Stop using Google! (Just Kidding.)

Search3w D2S product can outsmart the algorithms so client’s sites can hold a strong position among high volume searches and thousands of long tail variations. While a solid SEO strategy is critical for ensuring that your site holds and keeps a top 10 ranking, there is no substitute for a good website that people really want to use. Here comes Search3w usability product (OBS) to the picture.

“People must be able to find it easily when they are searching Google. Once they do, the site has to provide what they are looking for, quickly and easily. Search Engine Optimization helps you achieve the first goal; usability testing the second” said Rick Nielsen, VP of marketing at Search3w.

If you’re not D2S subscriber, this is what you want to do without risking the ranking that works.
1. Edit your keywords and description metatags to include the phrase variations.

2. Edit your title tag with the exact long tail phrase.

3. Add a comment section with “code” that diversifies the density of your phrase variations in different areas of this “code”.

4. Check that you have no empty ALT tags and fill them up with your phrase variations. Be careful to have unique content for each ALT tag that also meaningful for the image it represent. Warning – Don’t push keywords in the “space.gif” images!

Why should you care about the rise in Google competition?

Have you ever wondered why, although your website search programs are more sophisticated and your budget finer every year, search engines organic results get harder to achieve as time goes on?
Don’t blame yourself. What you’re facing is the increasing competition of the search engine results page. As more and more companies are realizing the baseline importance of having a Web site, and the number of sites increase, so will the search engine results naturally increase in volume.
However, I believe this can be attributed in part to the rising importance and budget allocated to search marketing strategies. The more companies and site owners invest in paid and organic search strategies, the hotter the competition gets.
Some key differences in the 2010 results you may have noticed:
  • More sponsored ads – particularly in the space above the organic listings.
  • Increase in the variety of results such as “news results” and YouTube videos (versus regular Web pages).
  • Multiple page listings for a given site.
  • The “Google” logo is smaller.
  • The “books” link in the blue bar directly below the search box has been replaced with a “show options” link.

By far the biggest difference is the sheer volume of results. On which the right-hand side will read, “Results 1-10 of about X.” This is telling you that the SERP is displaying the top 10 organic results of the total number of results (X).
In the face of increasing competition, you may want to:
  • Be smarter about which keywords and focus on very niche/long-tail terms. This is exactly what Search3w D2S product does.
  • Ensure your Web site content is surprising and offers something that no one else does. Keep it fresh and do frequently updates
  • Look beyond Google presence opportunities (e.g., tweets are now being indexed in search results, which presents another opportunity to get content out there).
  • Google announced that they started to use site speed as one of the 200 signals that influence the position of a website in the search results. Choose a fast and reliable web host with a good connection to the Internet. A “cheap” web host could cause problems.

Unravel Google’s 200 signals list – Get your copy now.

  1. Workout your Google Quality Score – Increasing your clickthrough rate (CTR) which leads to a better Quality Score and paying less per click (lower CPC).
  2. Call Google PPC expert and reduce time and effort spent optimizing campaigns.
  3. Promote your business on Google Maps. It is much easier (and faster, only 8 weeks) to be on top of seven A to G spots than on Google organic.

CEO Spotlight Elchanan Martin Rotstain Acroterion Inc.

Please provide us with your biography. Tell us about your background and your role in the company?

I have been the CEO of Acroterion since 2001.  Prior to that I spent twenty years doing academic research and worked directly with search engines and software architecture methodologies. I am an internationally-acclaimed expert known to the world as “The Search Engine Doctor.”  I am also the author of a university thesis about search methodologies that was used to develop the first search engine frameworks.  Presently, I am doing research with doctoral students at the University of Alberta, the University of Michigan and the Department of Mathematics at Bar-Ilan University.

Since July of 2006 I have been a member of the SEMPO Research Committee. I won second prize in the IT contest for outstanding system analysis using object-oriented methodologies.  I was also awarded for my research at the Weizmann Institute of Science www.weizmann.ac.il.

What are your main services?

·     Search Engine Solutions (number #1 out of 75 million in Google)

·     Publishing e-commerce and CMS sites as Static HTML pages (a product we developed)

·     Spider Bots Developer

·     Morphological Analysis

·     Solving Search Engine Problems (like banning)

·     Mathematics and Algorithms of Search Engines

·     Search Engines Engineering

·     Search Engines Laws and Patents

What makes your firm different from other companies competing in your industry?

How many SEO firms really know how spiderbots function or how the Google algorithm was built?  The difference between our company and other SEO firms is that we truly understand how search engines work.

Furthermore, we do not take on clients unless we believe that they will be 100% successful.  That is what sets us apart from the competition: not everyone can become one of our clients.

We have a 100% success rate and all of our clients have at least doubled their sales!  Our clients tend to stick with us for a minimum of five years because they don’t want to halt their success.

Another advantage of working with my company is that clients can speak directly with me, the CEO of the company, rather than having to speak through an “account manager” or “seo specialist.”

Tell us more about your firm’s success story?

The first thing I did after establishing the company was build a better spiderbot. I sent it into a few major domains and sold them the reports the spider generated. The benefits of buying the reports were the fact that they did not violate privacy and they increased search engine indexability.

Since 2001, we have been working with some of the world’s top companies including 3M, Ice.com, Overstock and more. Many of them contact us after having failed with other SEO firms. Here is the type of letter we typically receive from clients:

“We contacted several companies and spent money for nothing. Those ‘optimization’ or ‘submission’ services did not diagnose our search problems and therefore they failed Definitely Mr. Rotstain is “the search-engines master”, I guarantee that any company working with Acroterion will not be disappointed..”

According to you, what are the most important questions a potential customer should ask a company before choosing a vendor like you?

1.  Are you a web designer or webmaster that “did it once by mistake,” or do you really understand how search engines work?

2.  Will my SEO/SEM project be done right the first time around or will I have to get it redone later?

3.  Can you assure me that I will not be banned by Google?

What are some of the myths in your field?

Myth #1 – “Find the cheapest SEO services possible.” – Many clients call us after they have failed or been banned because they put their livelihoods in the hands of unprofessional SEOs.  In SEO, the mantra is that you get what you pay for so if the price sounds too good to be true, it is.

Myth #2 – “Search engine formulas are secret.” – Wrong. If you involve yourself in developing search engine algorithms and keep up with the patents they publish, you can understand search engine formulas much better.

How do you develop your skills in this continuously changing environment?

At Acroterion, we’re always busy training our employees to teach them new technologies, break complex formulas, and patents texts to applied actions.

What do you see as the future of the industry? What will be the challenges; do you anticipate any drastic changes?

Yes, there will be drastic changes in the future of the search industry. Search engines will be more social and more personalized. Our development team is already working on a new social version of the “site wizard” product to cope with these changes. We’re also developing a new spiderbot that will be the answer to personalization issues.

Where do you see your firm in the next 5 years? What about you personally?

I have good reason to believe that one of the major search engines will acquire my company (two years ago we refused an offer) and take advantage of the spiderbot we built. I see myself serving as a research or application architect rather than busying myself with the daily tasks of running a company.

Google maps revamped

Google MapsGoogle has made a powerful push towards becoming the leader in local search. In the past year, Google has implemented a great concentration of changes and testing in Google Maps. Furthermore, Google will acquired leading local players like Yelp. Last month, Google published new Business Listing Quality Guidelines that make it very clear what is and isn’t acceptable for Google Maps listings. The new guidelines have set the stage for aggressive spam scouring within local business listings on Google Maps. This major shift wiped out thousands of innocent business listings that did not meet Google’s new quality guidelines.

In the last few weeks, I have had a few conversations about these changes with *** a manager at Google, Inc. I told him that it reminds me of something that happened before I was married, when I lived close to the downtown area, and a city contractor put up “no parking” signs on the streets without prior notice. At 7 am, while everyone was still sleeping, all of the cars in the neighborhood were towed.

The following was ***’s response:

Hello Dr. Rotstain,

Unfortunately, our teams are not staffed to provide individualized support for this product. Support is primarily handled through [...] when an account is suspended, all listings in that account are deleted. Business owners, of course, are welcome to recreate their listings, so long as they follow the listing guidelines.
Again, I understand this must be frustrating, and I apologize for [...]

Regards,
***

I strongly recommend that you read the new Business Listing Quality Guidelines very carefully and update your listings accordingly. The new guidelines can be found here:

Search3w’s changes to service terms

As of 2010, owing to Google’s new Business Listing Quality Guidelines, Search3w will provide Google Maps setup and consulting services for clients, but will not provide monthly monitoring or optimization until further notice.

Google real-time search

We knew it was inevitable, and this year it has finally become a reality: Google has integrated real-time search into its search results. Google’s real-time search feature posts updates as things happen around the web. Live tweets, Yahoo Answers, news articles, and web pages now stream into search engine results pages for search queries. Google’s real-time search also works on mobile smartphones, such as the iPhone and the Android.

That’s not all, though. Google has announced that they’ve partnered up with both Facebook and MySpace to pull data into real-time search. As a result, updates on public Facebook pages and any streaming data that is available publicly on Myspace will show up in real-time search. This deal with Myspace and Facebook is on top of the deal with Twitter that Google announced back in October.

Welcoming the inevitable

It’s been clear for some time that search would move towards real-time, but until now, Google seemed to be falling behind Twitter, and perhaps even Bing, which made its own search deals with Twitter and Facebook earlier this year. Now, in one sweeping stroke, Google has grabbed the lead in the real-time search space, and both Facebook and Twitter have conceded that they aren’t going to try to outdo Google when it comes to search. These are significant strategic decisions for all parties involved because they dictate which direction these companies will take in the years to come.

P.S.
Few seconds after I have published this post, it was already indexed and was available on Google’s search!

Cyber Crime Stopper and Security Check

Cyber Crime CheckITThe Cyber Crime Stopper and Security Check is a new Search3w product that uses the Search3w spiders to find vulnerabilities and security holes, such as Google hacking, in the websites it scans. This product is the latest version of Search3w’s famous CheckIT product, which was introduced in 2001.

Hackers are now concentrating their efforts on web-based applications, such as shopping carts, forms, and log-in pages.

Since these web-based applications are often tailor made, they are tested less and are more vulnerable to cyber attacks than off-the-shelf software. The Cyber Crime Stopper and Security Check determines if your website is hackable by automatically checking web applications Scripts, Login Forms, XSS, SQL Injection, and other web vulnerabilities.

If you want to give the Cyber Crime Stopper and Security Check a trial run, contact Rick Nielsen here >>
