2010 Trends From Search3w

The New Year is upon us, and many of us have already begun preparing for what is to come in 2010. Here at Search3w, we’re helping online businesses prepare for their biggest year yet. What better time than now to look into the crystal ball and see what 2010 has in store for search marketing and the internet? Below are some of my predictions for the New Year…

  • The moment we were all waiting for this year has come and gone: Microsoft swallowed Yahoo Search and established the new search engine, Bing. Microhoo’s Bing will undoubtedly give Google serious competition in the search marketplace. My prediction is that in about a year from now, Bing will have approximately 28% of the market share. As such, make optimizing for Bing your next priority after optimizing for Google.
  • Recently, we welcomed a new baby to internet marketing: CRO, or Conversion Rate Optimization. CRO consists of building processes that help to improve conversion rates over time. Online businesses have the potential to generate significant revenue from CRO, yet few have invested in it. CRO enables companies to assess where they spend money and where they derive the most value. 2010 will undoubtedly be a big year for CRO.
  • Mobile search took off in 2009, and in 2010, I believe that mobile search will reach its Acroterion (i.e. pinnacle). According to comScore, the use of touch screen mobile smartphones like Palm, Rim, HTC and iPhone increased by over 150 percent in 2009. With the continual increase in the usage of easy-to-surf smartphones, we will inevitably see a rise in mobile search adoption. It’s pretty safe to assume that in the next few years, we’ll see mobile search volume overtake that of desktop computer search. Search3w’s D2S product automatically generates mobile WAP-enabled content and submits it to the mobile search engines.
  • The duplicate content detector robot and semantic search retrieval are two patents that were recently issued by Google and will be available in 2010. Search3w’s D2S product is our answer to the first patent, and OBS site search is our answer to the second one. You’ll want these two guys on your side next year!
  • Lately, Google has been emphasizing site speed as a ranking factor. Search3w clients are hooked to big brother monitoring software that checks their site speed 24×7. If you’re not a Search3w client, remember not to let slow server speed lower your site’s ranking!
This is how Google’s new interface will look in 2010 (click to zoom):

    Google 2010 interface

In 2010, Search3w will introduce a new sister product to D2S and OBS called “Links3w.” Similarly to how D2S and OBS do a great job with on-page optimization, Links3w will give our clients peace of mind when it comes to off-page optimization.

Happy New Year!

Google Secret New Engine, code name: Caffeine

google_caffeine.jpgGoogle made the unconventional move of announcing a potential major change to its organic search results algorithm. The announcement heralded “a secret project: a next-generation architecture for Google’s Web search.”

Every once in a while Google makes a major algorithmic change to its organic results. In reality, its organic algorithm changes at least monthly, if not more frequently, but the major changes are sometimes announced. Even when they aren’t, these changes are quickly named by the industry, like hurricanes named at the time they prove themselves able to do damage

Like prior major changes in the algorithm, Caffeine will profoundly affect the SEO industry and may impact your SEO rankings or traffic, positively or negatively. It may also significantly impact your PPC (AdWords) search strategy and that of your competitor.

Let’s look at the stated objective for Caffeine and imagine how these changes might shake things up, based on the attributes and dimensions that were mentioned in Google’s announcement.

Index Size and Speed
Problem: News sites and real-time blogging platforms, both within social media sites like Facebook and through sites like Twitter, generate a huge volume of content that is only fresh for a short time.
Solution: Google Caffeine will index, refresh and rank them faster.

Accuracy
Problem: Most people would agree that Google is fairly accurate now. However, for certain query types, its accuracy is still fairly poor. In particular, Google struggles with integrating local results into the organic results beyond the local results section.
Solution: Work harder on Google maps. Interestingly, with Caffeine I noticed less news included and more local business listings included. Of course, they aren’t always at the top; the top organic listings are generally not geocentric and are often links to a wiki or other reference site.

Personalization
Problem: The personalization extends beyond geographic data center issues to the user level. This means that even if you have what looks like a top organic position, you may not have that position for everyone who searches.
Solution: You’ll have to make your own determination based on what your lost opportunity might be. I recommend testing paid listings even when you have a top organic listing.

Try it now with your own keywords www2.sandbox.google.com and report me with your findings!

kosher duplicate content

This is my answer to P.J. Fusco for her column on ClickZ, Sep 23, 2009, RE:

Deduping Duplicate Content

My name is Elchanan (Martin) Rotstain. I’m a member of the Search Engines Research Committee of SEMPO.

My company, www.Search3w.com, utilizes some very unique proprietary technology for greater site visibility, search engine optimization and usability.

You may call it “duplicate content”.

I have some news for you. Not always duplicate content is “duplicate content”. Do you want some examples?

1. Section 508 copy

2. Set of webpages for each city a national company has a branch.

3. Two pages for the same ring: One yellow and the other white gold.

Attached our email promo explains this product.
Call me to discuss this product (or the philosophy) in details.

Best,

News From Search3w

Welcome to our July Newsletter. In this issue, you will read an interview with Acroterion CEO Elchanan Rotstain, Google updates and the “waves” algorithmic rule, announcement of our new site search technology, and a 10% coupon to Static Site Wizard. We sincerely hope you will find this information helpful and we welcome your feedback.

Feature CEO Spotlight
ceo_spotlight.jpgCanada, July 14, 2009 – Acroterion Inc. is pleased to announce recognition of its leading organic optimization services by topseos, an independent authority on search vendors around the globe. This month CEO Spotlight featured Mr. Rotstain answering questions about service/product differentiation, Acroterion’s success story, Myths in SEO field, and the future of the search industry.

What are the most important questions a potential customer should ask before choosing a SEO vendor?

Google upadates and “waves” algorithm
google_waves.gifMy prediction for 2009 about Google updates was absolutely correct. I believe this update is bigger than many conceive, and is a result of Bing (Microsoft’s new search engine technology will power also Yahoo’s sites) going live.
In addition to that, Google is preparing for the launch of Google Wave – a new dimension in social networking, and it looks like it is going to be big!
Google does weight related keywords more now (theme keywords), and using new links weight formula called PageRank sculpting.

What Can You Do?
Human cannot optimise PageRank sculpting for CMS website, or any website larger than 300 web pages. The good news is, using “Static Site Wizard” – You don’t really care. Your website will be published with the current Google mathematics every night.

Regardless of your website size, you must execute online “waves”. This includes social bookmarking, twitter, blogs and great content. Reply to this blog and get a waves plan.

We need a web presence and traffic can you help us?

seo q&a
Q: Just built this site not one of the most beautiful jewelry sites out here on the web. What we need is a web presence and traffic can you help us? We are new to this, and we don’t want to lose our shirts in advertising that does not work.

A: THIS IS YOUR PROBLEM

  • Be modest. Your site is not “most beautiful jewlrey sites out there”.
  • Nobody can help you get top ranking for “Powered by Microsoft Office Live Small Business” website. Don’t spend even a penny for that. It will be too long to explain to you why, but you can call me (780) 454-0970 to get all the details.

It is nice to find a SEO guy that actually knows how the system really works. So many SEO people cheat our clients and it makes us crazy.

    Q: Entire site isn’t indexed: http://www.know2know.com

A: Your home page does not have links to deeper pages of your site (sitemap XML is not sufficiently) and your search results are purposeless. Why do you believe Google will index its own advertisements?

Banning due multilingual version of website

    seo q&a
    Search3w: Dear Mr. Panini,

I NEED MORE DETAILS ABOUT YOUR PROBLEM

        1. When it happened?
        2. What have you recently did or changed?
        3. Why do you think it banned?

You can find some answers for common ban issues here: http://blog.search3w.com/category/seo_questions_answers/

    Panini: Dear Martin,

As requested you can find here more details related to our problem:

        1. When it happened? It happened in March 2007 when we dismissed the old website and launched the new one (as it appears now). Google ranked the domain www.***.it but not the main one www.***.com.

The .com domain was previously ranked in Google but then banned. In June 2007 we also presented the multilingual version of our website.

        2. What have you recently did or changed? We are trying to optimize contents and metatags (title, keyword, description) for search engine optimization but the problem of www.***.com still remains (banned).

        3. Why do you think it banned? We are very confused since the website is well structured and we keep updating contents.

    Thanks again for your help

    Best Regards

    Panini

Search3w: The multilingual version is defiantly the reason. Are you sure all your sites are happily grasping in Google meadow?!

This is typical Google filter for months now, so they’re not banning related sites (checked by whois data similarity, too many cross links, etc),
what they do is, if you have A.com, B.com and C.com domains they will show only A.com were the other two B.com and C.com sites are “transferring their juice” (jargon, read nice explanation here: http://knol.google.com/k/randy-zlobec/what-is-link-juice)tp://knol.google.com/k/randy-zlobec/what-is-link-juice) to A.com.

Don’t be so sure your sites are banned, they just boosted another site of yours. This is exactly what BLOGS are for.

You also hit the “Google canonical filter” which even BMW has been banned in the past (here: http://www.mattcutts.com/blog/ramping-up-on-international-webspam/), from the same reason: Doing wrong with their multiple sites targeting different languages.

Panini, use my analysis and learn how to optimize your sites for Multilingual & International SEO. Do it right and within 6 weeks you are on the road again.

If you have any questions regarding the subject, please contact us.

    Best Regards,

It is very hard to find a ‘trust worthy’ SEO and PPC company now days or I should say it’s hard to tell who is legit if your not experienced with it. You will get companies that will guarantee you top rankings for $X amount of dollars, but from my business experience and business relations with Elchanan I can tell you that he is not one of them con-artist.”
